Abstract

Robert Browning's friendship for Isabella Blagden was almost as remarkable as was his love for Elizabeth Barrett. After Elizabeth's death (June 1861), Browning went to England to educate their son, but he hoped eventually to return to Italy, principally so that he might be near his friend "Isa." He asked her to write to him once a month on the twelfth, promising to answer her letter on the nineteenth. The fulfillment of this obligation resulted in a correspondence which is remarkable from the standpoint of continuity. Most collections of letters suffer from their fragmentary form; there are no continuing threads of interest which hold them together. Not so the letters which Browning wrote to Miss Blagden. They are not in the great English letter writing tradition, being obviously written for Isa rather than for posterity, but they are filled with the most intimate and interesting sort of gossip and informal exchanges of ideas which give them a character all their own. One hundred and fifty-four letters from Browning to Isabella Blagden are known to be in existence; all of them are included in the present volume, together with copious explanatory notes and an illuminating introduction. Edward C. McAleer has approached every detail of his editorial task with thoroughness, imagination, and skill. His notes will add immeasurably to the pleasure of reading the letters, in addition to making a substantial contribution to the world's knowledge of Browning and his associates.

Abstract

The works by Isa Genzken have been exhibited in international institutions and galleries for over twenty years. Her work is characterized by a variety of often unexpected materials. Her artistic vocabulary acknowledges modernism as both model and loss, reflecting an awareness of art's present horizon. This book offers a survey that allows the seeming discontinuities in Isa Genzken's work to appear as a complex continuum. It is a sequel to the first part of the catalogue raisonné Jeder braucht mindestens ein Fenster (Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 1992).

Abstract

This artist's book designed by Belgian artist Olivier Foulon is the result of a years-long research on an abandoned sculpture project by Isa Genzken in Rotterdam. It features two essays on Isa Genzken by Jan van Adrichem, a section gathering archival documents, and a comprehensive press kit referring to the aborted project. The point of departure for this publication lies in the invitation of Anne-Claire Schmitz and Nicolaus Schafhausen of the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art to take part in “Melanchotopia”, a group exhibition in the city center of Rotterdam that ran from 3 September to 31 December 2011.Divided into three parts—Essay, Biography and Bibliography—this publication attempts to structure the available material on Isa Genzken's Ring, a public sculpture planned for the exhibition “Beelden in de Stad/Sculpture in the City” in the frame of “Rotterdam '88, de Stad als Podium/The City: A Stage”—from 13 May to 1 October 1988.The Essay is composed of two texts by Jan van Adrichem. “Isa Genzken's Work in Public Spaces” first appeared in the exhibition catalogue Isa Genzken, published by Verlag Silke Schreiber, Munich, 1988. The text evinced a strong belief in the realization of Isa Genzken's Ring by October 1988. The second text—an annoted typescript found in the archive of SIR (Sculpture International Rotterdam)—was written with the intention to speed up the process of the installment. Planned to be published in Het Gebaar in 1990, it is published here for the first time under the title “Isa Genzken's Ring.”The Biography is a summary of all the administrative documents found in the Rotterdam City Archive, the archives of SIR and CBK (Centrum Beeldende Kunst), as well as in private archives in The Netherlands, tracing the trajectory of Isa Genzken's Ring, from the beginning of the planning for “Beelden in de Stad/Sculpture in the City” (to which Isa Genzken was invited in 1987) until the closure of the files in 2002.The Bibliography includes all texts, press articles and interviews in which Isa Genzken's Ring is mentioned, reviewed and/or has been reproduced from its conception in 1988 to the present.

Abstract

Since the late 1970s, the Berlin-based contemporary artist Isa Genzken (b. 1948) has produced a body of work that is remarkable for its formal and material inventiveness. In her sculptural practice, Genzken has developed an expanded material repertoire that includes plaster, concrete, epoxy resin, and mass-produced objects that range from action figures to discarded pizza boxes. Her heterogeneous assemblages, a New York Times critic observes, are "brash, improvisational, full of searing color and attitude." Genzken, the recent subject of a major retrospective at MoMA, offers a highly original interpretation of modernist, avant-garde, and postminimalist practices even as she engages pressing sociopolitics and economic issues of the present. These illustrated essays address the full span of Genzken's work, from the elegant floor sculptures with which she began her career to the assemblages, bursting with color and bristling with bric-a-brac, that she has produced since the beginning of the millennium. The texts, by writers including Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, and the artist herself, consider her formation in the West German milieu; her critique of conventions of architecture, reconstruction, and memorialization; her sympathy with mass culture; and her ongoing interrogation of public and private spheres. Two texts appear in English for the first time, including a quasi-autobiographical screenplay written by Genzken in 1993. Contributors Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Diedrich Diederichsen, Hal Foster, Isa Genzken, Isabelle Graw, Lisa Lee, Pamela M. Lee, Birgit Pelzer, Juliane Rebentisch, Josef Strau, Wolfgang Tillmans, Lawrence Weiner.
